Cactus is proud to present another opportunity for fans to meet an epic metal band… CHILDREN OF BODOM.

Formed in 1993 in Espoo, Finland, CHILDREN OF BODOM has built a rock solid reputation as a one of the best pure metal bands in the world. The band’s name is derived from the infamous Lake Bodom murders, which took place in Finland in 1960. Originally named Inearthed (with a series of demos to their name), COB can be as downright brutal as any metal band when the situation demands. But what places this band at the pinnacle of the pack is the way it can suddenly dish up huge swathes of melody and instantly memorable choruses with an unmatched degree of musicianship that has seen vocalist / guitarist Alexi “Wildchild” Laiho and his cohorts grace the covers of musician magazines around the globe.

Everytime Dale performs at Cactus, he manages to transform the store into a honky-tonk.

There will be dancing in the aisles.

Save the date! You don’t wanna miss this!!

On The Sun Sessions, not only does Dale Watson evoke an era, but he revives it to the point that it seems that it never faded. Embodying the early recordings of Johnny Cash, Elvis, Carl Perkins brewed with his signature Texas juke joint cool, Dale Watson is what country is, was and should always be. Recorded at the fabled Sun Studios in Memphis, TN, The Sun Sessions is an album that deserves the label of “instant classic.” Backed by The Texas Two, these 14 original tracks turn love, heartache and the unsung heros of our everyday lives into legend.

The Sun Sessions is packed from start to finish with Watson’s mix of honky tonk, rockabilly and Americana, weaving each song into its own compelling story showcasing his mastery of songwriting that could stand side-by-side with the greats of country. This is what authentic country music sounds like, speaking to all of us with a wit and humor that’s as strong as a whiskey on the rocks and easy as a two-stepping rhythm. Listening to The Sun Sessions, it’s impossible NOT to have a good time and Dale Watson makes sure of that. So do yourself a favor, strap your boots on, snap your shirt up and get ready to dance with The Sun Sessions!

Since late 2010, The Wheel Workers’ crisp sound and intelligent, whimsical lyrics have earned them growing recognition in Houston’s active indie rock scene. In early 2011, lead singer Steven Higginbotham composed and recorded their critically-acclaimed debut album, Unite.Andrew Dansby of the Houston Chronicle praised it as a “lush and radiant pop album.” Paul Viscontini of The Loop Scoop wrote: “The lyrics are full of ‘everyman’ struggles of day-to-day life and love… Unite is a record that will demand an audience from a hungry Houston music scene.”

Following in the footsteps of socially-conscious artists like The Clash, Fugazi, and Bruce Springsteen, The Wheel Workers are unafraid to proclaim progressive values deep in the heart in one of America’s most conservative states. Jeremy Hart of Space City Rock calls “The MOP” (the opening track of Unite) “pretty freaking great,” picturing The Wheel Workers as “a quirky protest-ragtime band that’d be right at home marching on Wall Street, tubas and clarinets a-blazing, gathering people behind them as they danced their way in to tear down the financial giants.”

Since the release of Unite, The Wheel Workers have played regularly around Texas, receiving airplay on local radio stations, and opening for national touring acts such as Miniature Tigers, Elf Power and The Coathangers.

DREW HOLCOMB AND THE NEIGHBORS

When audiences hear Holcomb’s songs, there is an emotional attachment and reaction, proven by the epic “Live Forever” which was recently used during an episode of NBC’s Parenthood and sparked a downloading frenzy online. “We want to write songs that have moments of honesty, transcendence, and humanity; so our audience lets the songs into their lives,” Holcomb states, “All of my favorite songs and records that I have spent my life listening to, have helped me to understand the paradoxes of joy and suffering that we all experience. We just want to add to that conversation, and if we can do that, I will consider it a success.”

It consists of 9 new recordings that feature his haunting blues sound and dynamic guitar playing. Recorded at Sugarhill Studios by Grammy winner Steve Christensen the resulting album is a bold statement and not to be missed. Egan howls and drops his foot like a hammer on his stompbox, but it’s his flashy fingerwork on a National steel guitar that truly dazzles.

He’s an old soul and one of the most riveting performers in the city. When Egan pulls out his shiny National steel 6-string, plugs it in to high voltage, puts his right foot on an amplified wooden stomp box, and taps his effects pedals, he calls up spirits — ghosts like Chris Whitley, Jimi Hendrix, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell. Hell, even when the Rubies were still around, he was releasing them at about the same pace. And it’s not like he’s a young man anymore; no, he’s a lifer.

In recent years, Hopkins has been spending much of his time in Houston, to be with his girlfriend and collaborator, Lisa Novak, whose name is attached as a co-writer to nine of the dozen songs (13 counting a bonus track) on the Luminarios’ latest, Buried Treasures (San Jacinto). The album was mostly recorded in Tucson by Thomas Beach at Loveland Studio, and by Lars Goransson, Nathan Sabatino and Bill Cashman at the Cavern Studios; it features a roster of mostly Tucson musicians backing Hopkins up….Although there are a couple of superfluous tracks on Buried Treasures-”Good Morning” and the bonus track are both meandering sound experiments that sound a bit out of place-this is among the most consistently enjoyable albums Hopkins has released under the Luminarios banner. http://www.tucsonweekly.com/

Beverages by St. Arnold Brewing Co.

Johnny Winter has been a guitar hero without equal. Signing to Columbia records in 1969 called largest solo artist deal of it’s time, Johnny immediately laid out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic blues a prime combination for the legions of fans just discovering the blues via the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Constantly shifting between simple country blues in the vein of Robert Johnson, to all-out electric slide guitar blues-rock, – Johnny has always been one of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock (a la the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.) Throughout the ’70s and ’80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.
